Holbeck Viaduct plans are still on track

The slow-burning plan to reopen the iconic Holbeck rail viaduct to the public continues, with an open meeting on Tuesday (6 February 2018) for people to find out more, and perhaps get involved.

Meeting last summer under the Holbeck Viaduct arches

The viaduct is a Victorian masterpiece that runs from just outside the station, through Holbeck, and past Elland Road. It’s laid unused since the 1980s, and local residents have been working together since 2013 to try to see it reopened to the public – as a park, events space, walkway, and more.

Growing numbers of projects like this have sprung up around the world following the lead of the acclaimed New York Highline.
Ed Carlisle, local resident and one of the project’s steering group members, commented:

“This is a big long-term undertaking, but we’re chipping away, and making progress. Please join us in February to find out more, to help shape what we’re doing, to perhaps help out – and we are in particular looking for 2-3 people to join our informal steering group. Nothing is guaranteed – but if we’re patient, we might pull this thing off, and create a great thing for the city.”

The public meeting is on Tuesday 6 February, 6.30pm at the Midnight Bell pub on Water Lane in Holbeck. Further info on the project at holbeckviaduct.org.uk, the project is also on Facebook and Twitter.
