Help to get ready for Universal Credit

Universal Credit (UC) is a massive change implemented by the UK Government to how people receive six existing benefits. These are being rolled into one monthly payment. These changes will have an impact on how and when people are paid. The benefits being incorporate into UC are:

  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Income-related Employment Support Allowance
  • Income Support
  • Working Tax Credit
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Housing Benefit

The rollout of UC will impact those with changed circumstances or residents making a new claim for support. The transfer for those without a change of circumstances will take place at a later date.

Here at Leeds City Council (LCC), we know this change has worried many and lots of residents are concerned about the “online-by-default” setup to apply for and managing UC. Council officers have been working hard to build the support needed to help residents during this period.

I’m Confident Online

For residents who are online savvy, there is a lot of useful information on the Council website at https://www.leeds.gov.uk/residents/council-tax-and-benefits/universal-credit. Please read the help documents. If you need support, keep reading.

I’m Not Confident Online or Need Help

For residents who need more support, this can be found at LCC Community Hubs, Libraries or DWP Job Centre Plus Offices across Leeds. Specialised support on how to manage your money can be found locally in South Leeds at the Dewsbury Road Community Hub. People can also call (0113) 376 0330.

Our staff have been trained to help make this process as easy as possible and provide the support you need. If you need help, our message is clear – please ask. Your Council is here to help.
