Help needed to save Marie Curie’s Great Daffodil Appeal

I am writing to call on South Leeds Life readers to join Marie Curie and help.

Storm Emma has prevented thousands of volunteers from collecting for Marie Curie’s Great Daffodil Appeal last weekend. Because of this, Marie Curie is set to lose a devastating £400,000. That money is needed to fund Marie Curie nurses across the country working in communities like yours and mine.

In Leeds alone the loss is around £3000. This equates to 500 hours of care.

It’ll be no huge surprise that due to the very un-Spring like weather we experienced we had to take the decision of postponing most of the Great Daffodil Appeal collections due to take place last weekend across Yorkshire. The safety of our fantastic supporters and wonderful volunteer collectors is the most important thing and we’d prefer everyone to stay safe and warm.

Every donation made during the appeal each year helps us continue to provide expert care and support to people living with a terminal illness, and their families – so don’t worry, the 2018 appeal will be back, bigger and better very soon!

We are currently working hard on rearranging the collections cancelled this weekend for later in the month and also we have a big few days of collecting at Morrisons Hunslet on the 8th, 9th and 10th. There is still space on many of these collections!

In particular Marie Curie are looking for volunteers to give up just two hours of their time at Morrisons Hunslet at the following days and times:

  • Thursday 8 March – 9-11am, 3-5pm and 5-7pm
  • Friday 9 March – 9-11am and 5-7pm
  • Saturday 10 March – 9-11am

The Great Daffodil Appeal allows hundreds of people from the local community to donate and wear a daffodil pin, helping to raise awareness of our services.
