Leeds City Council has organised a series of free events for young people and their families to learn more about exciting apprenticeship opportunities currently available in Leeds.
24 of the city’s leading businesses and public sector organisations will host seminars to talk about the apprenticeships they offer. Each seminar will focus on different sectors including health and care; construction; digital; manufacturing and engineering; and professional and business services.
These early evening seminars, hosted at Leeds Beckett University, aim to encourage young people and their families to explore how completing an apprenticeship could be the best way to kick start a career in key industries and growing employment sectors across the city.
Leeds is seeing an increase in the number of businesses of all sizes and sectors offering apprenticeship programmes for those looking to work and continue their learning – following a Government commitment to creating three million apprenticeships by 2020. Apprenticeships offer on the job training at a number of levels to suit those leaving school and entering work for the first time to those seeking to gain a degree or professional qualification.
Councilor Jonathan Pryor, Leeds City Council’s Executive Member for Learning, Skills and Employment said:
“Apprenticeships offer a great alternative route to qualifications rather than following the traditional academic pathway. I’m delighted that we are able to support young people and families to further explore the variety of fantastic opportunities on offer in our city.
“These seminars, which are unique to Leeds, will provide up to date information and give attendees the chance to hear from lots of different businesses – including our city’s latest addition, Channel 4. Current apprentices will also be on hand to share their personal experiences and give a real flavour of what to expect with an apprenticeship. I would strongly encourage anyone who is interested in finding out more to attend the events – they are a great way to start planning for the future.”
Organised by Leeds Apprenticeship Hub at Leeds City Council, the seminars will be held at the Rosebowl, Leeds Beckett University from the 6 to 14 November 2019. Employers will provide information on how they recruit; the skills needed; and the support and career progression their apprentices can expect. Attendees will hear directly from current apprentices about their journeys and experiences of gaining qualifications whilst earning a salary and be inspired by the range and level of opportunities available.
Now in its sixth year, the seminars will profile companies and organisations such as Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust and Nursing Degree Apprenticeships; Eversheds and their Level 7 Solicitor apprenticeship programme; PWC; West Yorkshire Police; BJSS; User Crunch; DaleTech; NG Bailey; Leeds City Council; Kier; BAM; and Yorkshire Building Society.
