Councillor welcomes Junction 2 improvements

A local councillor has welcomed the announcement that a busy junction in South Leeds will benefit from new safety measures.

A range of improvements will be made at the Junction 2 roundabout of the M621, which Councillor David Congreve (Labour, Beeston & Holbeck) has supported after a long fight for action to be taken. Currently two of the four approaches to the roundabout have traffic lights. This has proved to be a safety concern for a roundabout which is used by 54,000 vehicles daily.

Leeds City Council’s Highways & Transportation department is planning to install new traffic signalling on the two other approaches. It is hoped that this will reduce the number of minor accidents on the queues to the roundabout. Similar work elsewhere suggests the improvements could see a 40% reduction in accidents on the junction.

With the whole junction signalled, and improved road markings, it is hoped that traffic flow can be controlled more easily, especially in emergency situations.

Pedestrians’ safety will also be improved thanks to the new traffic signalling. The work will be completed this financial year.

Cllr Congreve said:

“My colleagues and I welcome the plans to make Junction 2 fully signalised. This will not only increase safety for vehicle users and pedestrians, but improve traffic flow and reduce queues. Residents and commuters have requested that something should be done and I hope their concerns will be addressed. I look forward to seeing the changes when they are completed.”

  1. Good news! This is has always struck me as a very odd junction which wasn’t properly designed…
