Cottingley Primary Academy in Leeds is today celebrating its first ever “Good” Ofsted rating in the history of the school. Part of AET, the largest academy trust in the country, Cottingley was previously rated as “requires improvement” by Ofsted inspectors when they last visited in 2016, and in their whole history, the school has never been rated as “Good”.
Under the “tenacious” leadership of Mrs Kelly Bentley, Cottingley has seen radical improvement across a range of areas. In their report, Ofsted highlight:
- Pupil performance is good and improving, with standards in reading, writing and maths all having increased. In 2018, pupils’ performance in the key stage 2 statutory tests was above national averages in reading, writing and mathematics at the expected standard.
- The teaching of reading is good, and pupils read with enjoyment, expression and fluency. Pupils have engaged positively with the ‘Resilient Reader’ programme and this is helping to develop and hone their comprehension skills.
- Older pupils read regularly and review what they have read.
- There have also been improvements in the teaching of writing. Pupils enjoy writing, which is evident from their use of language in their written work.
- The whole school approach to maths, together with good quality teaching, have ensured that pupils are able to use and apply basic mathematical skills.
- Behaviour is good, with pupils behaving well around school and in class. Pupils are proud of their school – they are polite, well-mannered and confident to engage in conversation.
- Inspectors also commend the support and professional development provided by AET, and praise Cottingley’s partnership working with other AET schools, which has helped improve the quality of teaching and learning.
