Come and sing with Cockburn’s community choir

The Cockburn Community Choir is looking for new members to join them on a Thursday night.

The choir sings a range of material including pop past and present, musical theatre and more traditional choral pieces. They have performed at events both at Cockburn School and in the local community.

The choir was formed as part of a range of school activities that engage with the local community. It has now been running for six years and is run by the Cockburn School Music Department and their singing teacher, Sophie Thiruchelvam. There has always been a lovely mix of school staff, staff from other schools and local residents.

The choir is now looking for new recruits and hopes there are people reading this article who will take the plunge and come a give it a go. One of the current singers did this years ago when she saw an advert in South Leeds Life and came to try it out:

“I felt at ease, made to feel very welcome straight away and really enjoyed it.”

The choir leader, Sophie aims to provide a relaxed and fun atmosphere in which everyone can take part. She said:

“There is a complete mix of experience within the group from people who can read music and those who can’t, those who’ve sung in a choir previously and those who haven’t.”

Her main aim is that people come and enjoy the session and grow in confidence with their own singing.

The choir meets on a Thursday night from 5:00-6:00pm in the music rooms at Cockburn School. Snacks are provided to keep the energy levels up. Interested? Contact: info@cockburnschool.org putting Community Choir in the subject box.
