Cockburn School celebrates excellent exam results

Students from Cockburn School achieved excellent results this summer against a national and local backdrop that saw exams get harder with students sitting for the first time the new more challenging and rigorous GCSEs in English Language, English Literature and Mathematics and the introduction of 9 -1 grades.

The school is celebrating getting its highest ever exam results with 60% of students achieving the equivalent of A* – C now 9 – 4 in English and Maths. The progress the students have made in all their subjects over the last 5 years at Cockburn is exceptional and continues to be much higher than national averages. The Government’s measure of school performance is Progress 8 and current calculations indicate that it is likely that yet again, the Department for Education will recognise Cockburn for their excellent progress compared to other schools nationally.

Many students in Year 11 achieved above and beyond with the equivalent of A* – A in at least 8 subjects this year. Special congratulations go to one student in particular, Abigail Devaney who achieved the equivalent of A* – A in 11 qualifications.

In the new exams the new top grade of a 9 was only awarded to the top 3% of students nationally. At Cockburn this elusive high grade was achieved by Aeysha Tariq and James Yeung in English Literature and Lily Pearson and Katie Shelton in Mathematics.

Rob Dixon, Head of School at Cockburn School commented “We are extremely proud of all our students’ achievements this year. The students and staff at school worked exceptionally hard and went the extra mile in their preparations to ensure they achieved these brilliant results.”

  1. Congratulations to all the pupils who were part of the 60% who achieved the government target of Five 9-4 grade including English and Maths. We are all aware that this years exams were more difficult.
We should not forget the other pupils who achieved grade 1 and 2 as they have achieved a level 2 qualification.
Can Cockburn who class themselves as an inclusive school, please give us the percentage of pupils who did not take their G.C.S.E exams.
