City View GP practice wins innovation award

City View Medical Practice in Beeston has been praised for innovative approaches to patient care at NHS Leeds South and East Clinical Commissioning Group’s annual general meeting.

The practice has a bowel cancer champion, Clare Dean, who has used a wide variety of approaches to encourage more patients aged 60-74 to take the bowel cancer screening test. The practice was praised for “using innovative ways to address a ‘hard to reach community’ and should be recognised for its commitment to achieving significant improvements in bowel cancer screening – one of the CCG’s key priorities.”

Dr Andy Harris, Clinical Chief Officer at the CCG, said he wanted to use the AGM to celebrate good practice across the 42 GP surgeries in Leeds South and East.

“Family doctors work hard to support their patients, including coming up with innovative ways to help them, whether it’s developing new methods of treating people with particular conditions, increasing uptake of vital screening, or reducing medication waste,” he said.

Practices and colleagues were asked to nominate teams in five categories, these were then judged by the CCG’s Lay Member for Patient and Public Involvement, Gordon Tollefson, Healthwatch Leeds’ Chief Executive Tanya Matilainen and the CCG’s Head of Corporate Involvement Nerys Blake.

Dr Harris said he and fellow CCG directors were impressed by the quality of the entries and the innovative approaches by some of the practices.

“It is a challenging time for general practice, so it is particularly encouraging that practice teams have worked together to improve outcomes for patients,” he said.

The AGM, held jointly with the meeting of GP members from the CCG, was held at The Village, Tingley.

Award winners were:

  • Innovation: City View Medical Practice for its Bowel Cancer Practice Champion approach
  • Patient Experience: Ashfield Medical Centre for implementing the Year of Care approach to long-term conditions
  • Enhancing Quality and Safety: Moorfield House Surgery for identifying and supporting patients affected by domestic abuse
  • Demonstrating Leadership: Dr Naomi Penn, Shaftsbury Medical Centre for clinical leadership to develop and implement the electronic palliative care record
  • Collaboration: The Practice, Harehills Corner, for improving patient uptake of health checks and cancer screening
