Call to join the St Gemma’s Hospice Volunteer Team

St Gemma’s Hospice is a Leeds-based charity providing expert care and support for local people with life-limiting illnesses.

The Hospice in Moortown has a fantastic opportunity for Day Services Driver Volunteers on Wednesdays or Thursdays. If you want to directly make a difference to patients living with a terminal illness, then this could be the role for you.

If a patient chooses to remain at home during their illness they can attend the St Gemma’s Hospice Day Services to access creative therapy activities, massages, emotional support and appointments with specialist doctors and therapists.

This volunteer role involves using your own vehicle to transport more independently mobile patients between their homes and the Hospice so that they can access these vital services.

Jack, a Day Services Patient, shared his thoughts on the Hospice’s Day Services:

“My heartfelt thanks to all the staff and volunteers at St Gemma’s who have provided help and support to me during my day visits over the past few months. Your kindness and friendly conversation have genuinely given me a more positive outlook on life”.

St Gemma’s is particularly looking for people who live locally to south Leeds as that is currently an area with quite a few patients, but not many volunteer drivers who are able to travel there.

No clinical experience is needed, but you must have a current driving licence with access to a vehicle, as well as good communication skills and a passion for the work St Gemma’s does. You will not be required to transport patients who need significant mobility assistance.

The Hospice offers travel expenses, full training, the development of a portfolio of skills and a named supervisor.
