Belle Isle Gala to be opened by Queen’s representative

The Belle Isle Summer Gala takes place on Saturday (28 June 2014) and is to be opened by Michael Fox, the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire.

Working on the principle that if you don’t ask, you don’t get, organisers wrote to Buckingham Palace to invite the Queen to the Gala. Her Majesty wasn’t available, but is sending one of her representatives.

“This is a great honour for Belle Isle” explained one of the organisers “we are delighted to have the Deputy Lord Lieutenant as our special guest on Saturday.”

The gala promises to be a feast of fun with dance, sports, a fancy dress competition and live music. Other attractions include drumming workshops, exotic animals, face painting, Breeze inflatables, a magician and refreshments.

The Gala takes place at Windmill Primary School between 11am and 2pm on Saturday 28 June 2014 and has been organised by the school, BITMO and the Council’s South East Area Support Team.

Gala-goers will be able to sample Windmill’s In Harmony music project with Opera North. There will be performances by the Year 1 orchestra and the (adult) Community Choir.

The school’s neighbours, Hunslet Parkside ARLFC will be running a Rugby Festival to coincide with the Gala. There will be junior workouts led by Hunslet Hawks coach Barry Eaton, an Under 12 Challenge Trophy match against Mold Green and the BITMO Challenge Cup Under 15 match against Cottingham Tigers from Hull.

Harry the Hawk and Ronnie the Rhino will be in attendance and there will be a goal kicking completion and majorettes display.
