Beeston youngsters serving up soul food this month

Young people from the south Leeds ‘Space’ youth programme are once again this term cooking and hosting (free) community dinners for a wide range of local people to gather, eat, and mark the forthcoming Easter festival together.

The three-course meals are being served on Wednesday 29 March and Friday 31 March 2017, both at 6pm, both in Beeston. All are welcome, but pre-booking is essential (see below), and spaces are filling up fast.

Youngsters and volunteers helped with the recent Samara’s Aid charity appeal

‘Space’ has been running in Beeston since 2004, is connected with Kidz Klub, and – whilst not affiliated to any particular church – is largely funded by the Salvation Army, and supported by church congregations across LS11. About 100 young people aged 11-18 attend the groups each week, and also participate in trips, residentials, and volunteering.

Local resident Mark Hodgkinson, who co-runs the groups, commented:

“We’ve been running these community meals off and on for years, and they’ve been such special little events. It’s so important for young people – in fact, all of us! – to learn the value of serving others; and actually, the youngsters genuinely love the challenge and opportunity that the meals offer. Join us if you can – or get in touch anytime about the year-round groups we run.”

To request a space at one of the meals, email mahodgkinson85@hotmail.com; if you have any dietary requirements, please mention them; you will then get confirmation by email, including the venue. (At the time of publication, it looks like Wednesday is very nearly full, but there are still plenty of spaces for Friday.) To find out more about Space and how to join, click here or here.
