Beeston Co-op to become a Nisa store

Beeston’s Co-op Food store on Town Street has been sold and South Leeds Life understands it will reopen as a Nisa store on 21 September 2021.

In a statement a spokesperson for the Co-op confirmed the sale:

“The Co-op is moving forward with a clear purpose and momentum and while this often involves opening new stores, we also regularly review our existing sites. The decision to sell any store is not taken lightly and, only after careful consideration has our Beeston store been sold. Our priority has been to fully support colleagues, ensuring they all found alternative positions at Co-op or transferred (under TUPE regulations) to the new operator. We would like to thank the community for its support of this store over the years.”

The spokesperson stressed that the decision to sell was in no way a reflection on the hard work and commitment of the Beeston staff.

Nisa Retail Limited, who are a wholly owned subsidiary of the Co-operative Group Limited, have been approached for a comment.

  1. Our local Co-o became a Nisa (North Yorkshire) and closed a matter of weeks later! Now we have no local shop

  2. I’m a Coop member, as are many people in Beeston I’m sure. We weren’t consulted about this. This is the Coop, founded to provide good quality produce to working class people, pulling out of a working class area, and pulling out of selling good quality, ethically sourced food in the area. Nisa isn’t nicer at all, just cheap and nasty.

    2. I know I’ve spend most of my childhood shopping there and I am quite unhappy that’s its closing and being replaced by nisa

  3. That is… incredibly disappointing. The food desert of this side of Beeston gets worse.

  5. Am I missing something, the Co-op have sold the Beeston store to itself? How does that work?

    2. Britain sold out again the coop and the church once stood for something. We deserve all we get.

  6. It was well overpriced all co-op stores are, they have never been a store for the public purse, I am looking forward to the day when they all close, and as for Nisa only shopped there once but never again,get yourselves down to Aldi’s and Lidl’s for good value.
