Beeston Chip Shop scoops Yorkshire in Bloom awards

Park Fisheries gardenIn their first year of entering, Park Fisheries on Beeston Road have won two awards at the Yorkshire in Bloom annual awards.

Park Fisheries won a Silver Gilt Rose Award in the Business Premises (Large) category and also the Commercial award. They were up against firms such Sheffield Forgemasters and Betty’s of Harrogate. Unfortunately owners Simon Mortimer and Gail Cursley were too busy serving customers to attend the awards ceremony which was held in York on Tuesday (17 September 2013). Commenting on the awards Simon said:

“We are just a small business, we have no one in to do the flowers. Gail looks after them and does everything herself. We’re delighted, this award is good for Beeston.”

The judges commented that:

“The customers at this fish and chip shop are able to enjoy their takeaway in an environment reminiscent of a Mediterranean garden. Although a favourite venue for Leeds United fans on match days, the garden is free from litter and vandalism.”

More green-fingered members of the community celebrated as both Beeston in Bloom and Holbeck in Bloom won Silver Gilt awards. Meanwhile Leeds won Best City and the Chairman’s award which recognises commitment across the city in all aspects of the various In Bloom campaigns.

Linda Stanley, Secretary of Beeston in Bloom said:

“Despite a difficult year with the weather, Beeston in bloom has maintained it’s silver gilt medal position in this year’s Yorkshire in Bloom competition. The comments from the judges were very positive, making all the hard work well worth the effort.

“We’d like to thank all our sponsors and everyone who contributed on judging day (Clarkesfield allotments, St Mary’s church, St Anthony’s school and Park Fisheries) who all help display our pride in Beeston.

“The group will take the comments for improvement on board and with the new hardlanscaping planned for the Millennium Garden we’ll be going for gold in 2014.”
