Asha celebrates 33 years of serving women in Beeston

Beeston’s Asha Neighbourhood Project celebrated its 33rd AGM with the South Leeds communities and partnership organisations on Wednesday 20 November 2019.

Chairperson Afia Khattun started with the introduction of the services in Asha Neighbourhood Project.

Cllr Al Garthwaite (Director of Vera Media) spoke about the courses she runs at Asha and the difference they make to women’s lives, plus the difference Asha makes to women’s lives. She also spoke about how long both our organisations have existed and worked in South Leeds and the long and successful working relationship that has been maintained.

Al presented certificates to participants of the Volunteer Project: Certificate for Safeguarding and Certificate for personal Development.

Some ESOL learners spoke about the classes they are taking and said how this had helped them in their day-to-day lives, how supportive Asha was and how safe they felt here.

All the students who attended classes and volunteering workshops at Asha over the last year came forward for a group photograph in celebration of their achievement.

Courses:

  • ESOL Entry level 1, 2 & 3 + ESOL Level 1 (Learning Curve)
  • ESOL Communication & Confidence (Vera Media)
  • ESOL Understanding your community (Cardigan Centre)
  • Computers in everyday life (Vera Media)
  • Introduction to sewing (Vera Media)
  • Personal Development (Women’s Counselling & Therapy service)
  • Basic Safeguarding in the Community (Voluntary Action Leeds)

The AGM ended with a lovely hot lunch and delicious cakes.
