Gohar ALMAS

Labour Party

3 Preston Parade, Beeston, Leeds, LS11 7ND

I am a Beeston resident , married, father of three young girls, and also the proud son of a family who fought in the British Army defending Great Britain during WW1 & WW2.

I am Deputy Chair on the IAG for the West Yorkshire Police since 2015, and I also sit on the Police “Scrutiny Panel”.

I also volunteered as a “Health Champion” at City View Medical Practice, and been actively involved in many local and national causes and organisations including, serving on the board of Governors at Beeston Primary, Beeston Neighborhood plan, the Hamara HLC & HOPE, Just Give Charity for the Homeless, Secretary South Leeds Community Alliance, presently as Director of “Remembering Srebrenica” etc

I have worked tirelessly on the subject of community cohesion and integration and delivered lectures at various institutes and universities nationally and internationally on Community Peace building and conflict resolution.

As a student leader, I was an active campaigner against repression, extremism, radicalization and social injustice , I believe firmly in the solid British values of fairness & equal opportunities.

As a Labour member I believe and share the same values, that of a functional welfare state, better education for our children & first class health care for the elderly, employment and vocational opportunities for the young, and proactive policing for safer and cleaner neighbourhoods.

I owe my achievements to the opportunities given to me by this city in general, and in particular by Beeston.

The opportunity to serve the Beeston & Holbeck Ward as a Councillor, would be a true vocation, and my way of continuing to contribute to our wonderful neighbourhood.

Save Our Beeston & Holbeck Independents

28 Grovehall Parade, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS11 7AE

Save Our Beeston & Holbeck Independents main five policies are.

  1. To close down the so called “Managed Zone for Prostitution “ in Holbeck.
  2. To require the Leeds City Council to carry out regular atmospheric pollution monitoring @ Elland Road Park & Ride site now that there are 5,000 car movements a week saving pollution in the city centre but bringing it to Beeston.
  3. To remove the charges for taking DIY waste to council recycling centres which is adding to the fly tipping problem.
  4. To oppose any more crazy Labour Council Public Finance Initiatives deals that have resulted in £3,000,000,000 worth of contacts which are poor value for money for council tax payers.
  5. To insist that West Yorkshire Police Authority enforce the law specifically with respect to drug pushers, pimps & Kerb crawlers
  1. In addition, we will continue to insist that IcePac Planning conditions are rigorously enforced by Leeds City Council.
  2. Also, that the storage of cars on land adjacent to St. Anthony’s Primary school on Barkly Road complies with planning Law.

Through all this we will put the safety & wellbeing of the law-abiding residents of Beeston & Holbeck Ward as our one & only goal. We will be answerable only to our residents, unlike the elected councillors of other political parties that have to conform to the “party whip” system.

Owen Arthur David BREAR

Green Party

402 Greenhouse, Beeston Road, Leeds, LS11 6AE

I’ve lived in Beeston since 2014, campaigning alongside the local Green Party lead candidate Ed Carlisle to improve our area. We describe many of our local policies on the Hunslet and Riverside page, so I’ll focus on two burning local issues.

First, Holbeck’s so-called managed sex-work zone. Outdoor sex-work has been a long-standing problem here. Labour’s ‘managed zone’ approach was bold, but was introduced without proper consultation or resources, and it has blighted residents’ lives. So the approach to sex-work in the city needs an urgent rethink. If elected, we’d step up our current work seeking better solutions from within the community, especially tackling drug abuse.

Second, the development of Beeston’s abandoned Ice Pak factory into a community centre by Aspiring Communities is proceeding, despite some vocal resistance. We love seeing disused sites returning to communal use, so it’s a huge shame that this project became so divisive. We’ve worked hard to encourage engagement and discussion on all sides — and will continue to help make this a facility that benefits everyone.

These issues have breathed new life into Beeston and Holbeck’s politics. Let’s harness this energy to transform our area.

I am a Beeston resident, mother of two, grandmother of six and I’m a retired nurse and union rep with 41 years service in NHS. I am proud to be a Labour councillor representing this ward for over 20 years and I’m proud of the achievements of the Labour run council.

We have worked hard to maintain core services during this period of austerity and the council’s budget has been cut by a massive 240 million pounds by the Conservatives.

Unlike other councils in the country we have been able to keep open all our children’s centres in our ward – Two Willows Children’s Centre on the Cardinals and Cottingley Children’s Centre.

We support neighbourhood networks in our ward that look after our older residents – so that’s South Leeds Live at Home and Holbeck Elderly Aid.

We have invested in council housing such as the new build in Holbeck, and upgrading our council homes to decency standard.

We will pay the national living wage of £8.75 as the minimum pay for LCC staff.

We are extending our brown bin service.

We are installing a sprinkler system in Cottingley Heights & Towers

We have set up a reference group with local residents to discuss the managed approach and we will continue to demand that this approach is properly policed and that the kerb crawlers are prosecuted and the women given help to exit the profession.

With regard to Ice Pak we have set up a group who meet regularly with members from Aspiring Communities and the local community.

It really does make a difference to which 3 councillors represent our ward. I have lived in Beeston for 17 years buying my house in the area when I started my Masters Degree programme at Leeds University. I have also lived in London, Toronto and Kingston Jamaica. Beeston is however, where I want to be and I care deeply about my area, the residents and businesses in my area.

We suppose that those in positions of public office know what they are doing. We imagine they are making informed decisions based on sound analysis and for the long term benefit of everyone. This is not the case in Leeds.

There is a strong voice in our local council and is it is in a small group of Liberal Democrat councillors. I want to add to that voice and bring back common sense policy making as well as create long term investment that changes the landscape of Beeston and our city.

No to the managed zone

No to further planning without full neighbourhood forum involvement

Yes to city investment via a new council owned development company

Yes to a long term integrated transport strategy

Yes to an increase in funding of youth services

Yes to parking control on match days

I live Beeston and I love the friendliness and energy of our community. There is so much good stuff happening in South Leeds, and I am excited about what we can achieve, working together as local councillors and community groups to make this an even better place to live.

I love South Leeds

I moved to Leeds over 10 years ago, unsure where I wanted to settle. Beeston was very welcoming and I’m now firmly rooted here with my young family! We have experienced the benefits of Leeds – job opportunities, great parks, schools, museums and sports facilities. I could go on and on! I want to fight for constant investment in these facilities in our area.

I have a strong track record of working hard for our community

Locally, I am the Chair of Governors at Beeston Primary, our recent Ofsted report said the Governors “are uncompromising in their pursuit of excellence.” I am also a Trustee of Mosaic Church.

I have the skills and experience to make an excellent councillor.

My voluntary roles and my career in the financial sector have equipped me well for the role of a Councillor.

Robert James William WINFIELD

Conservative Party Candidate

7 Allenby Gardens, Beeston, Leeds, LS11 5RW

I am a lifelong resident of Beeston. Having been involved in a number of local organisations for many years, I have a very strong grasp of local issues. I have taken up numerous issues, both large and small.

Conservatives, above all, stand for getting better value for money from the council tax which you pay. I am totally opposed to Labour’s plans to charge for disposing bulky household waste. These charges will lead to flytipping, which is already a problem in parts of the ward. Conservatives are also committed to spending an additional £1.5 million to improve roads in the City .

Conservatives will review the Managed Prostitution Zone in Holbeck. This has caused reputational damage to Holbeck and was disgracefully imposed on Holbeck residents without consultation. Prostitution is also being allowed to spread into other parts of the ward. Residents should not have to tolerate this.

The ward has been represented only by Labour Councillors since the early 1970s. When you vote, ask yourself whether Labour has made the area better. It is time to elect Conservatives in Beeston and Holbeck Ward
